What is Moonrock Weed?
Moonrock weed, otherwise known as moon rocks, is a concoction of cannabis flower, extract, and kief. More specifically, weed nugs are covered with cannabis oil and then rolled in kief to create an incredibly potent smoking experience.
Typically, moonrock weed averages a high potency level of more than 50% THC, which varies depending on the materials used. Its potency is its main appeal. Moon rocks are known to offer a powerful high that many claim is otherworldly, just as the name suggests.
How to Smoke Moonrock Weed
First and most importantly, do not put moon rocks in a grinder; the delicacy should only be picked apart with your hands.
Moonrock weed is best consumed in glassware, such as a bong or pipe. It will smoke best if placed on top of a little flower in the bowl. It’s also possible to smoke moon rocks in a blunt or joint. Sprinkle small crumbs in your ground bud and then roll it up.
You may have heard the saying, “start low and go slow” before. This applies even heavier to moon rocks.

Where Moon Rocks Originated
Like many other great weed products and strains, moon rocks transpired through the crossover of hip-hop and cannabis. Kurupt, rapper and former Death Row Records executive, along with music-artist-turned-cannabis-mogul Dr. Zodiak came up with the idea after collaborating on a mixtape together. In 2013, they formed the first line of branded moon rock weed, named Dr. Zodiak’s Moonrock.
Originally, the GSC strain (aka Girl Scout Cookies) was the standard strain to use in this crazy cannabis concoction, but now there are many varieties to choose from by tons of other brands and dispensaries, as well as the possibility to throw together whatever variation you’d like yourself.
How to Make Moonrock Weed
It isn’t complicated to make moonrock weed, but it can get messy. You only need three ingredients:
Cannabis flower - strong, dense nugs work best. A stem will help when crafting it.
Cannabis oil - most extracts can work on moon rocks, but it is best to use one with a thinner and looser consistency, like distillate or live resin.
Kief - many dispensaries sell kief for cheap, but you can also find some in the chamber at the bottom of your grinder. If not, well, you’ll need to grind up more weed!
Where to Find Moon Rocks
Moonrock weed isn’t as widely available as other products, but it can be found in most recreational states. However, it is unlikely you will find moon rocks at any medical cannabis dispensary. Check Weedmaps or Leafly to find moon rocks near you.
If you can’t find pre-made moon rocks, you can likely find all of the ingredients to make them so don’t be afraid to attempt crafting them yourself.
