What is a Recreational Dispensary?

With the legalization of cannabis across various states in the U.S., thousands of weed shops, better known as dispensaries, have opened up. There are three different types of dispensaries, and local regulations determine what type you will find around you. We have many customers that come to KushKlub with questions about the difference between medical and recreational cannabis.

First, there are medical dispensaries. These cannabis shops are seen in states with medical marijuana programs like Florida and Oklahoma. Then, there are recreational dispensaries which are found in states with legal recreational adult-use cannabis. Additionally, there are dispensaries that are both medical and recreational, which are often found in states like California, Oregon, and Colorado.

What is a Recreational Dispensary?

This article will dive into what exactly a recreational dispensary is and how they work. So, what is a recreational dispensary? A recreational dispensary is a store that sells legal cannabis for adult use. These shops are only allowed to be open for retail in states where cannabis is recreationally legal for use and sales.

To purchase cannabis products at adult-use dispensaries, you must be 21 years or older. You do not need a special marijuana card like you would for medical dispensaries. However, you do need to show proof of age via a driver’s license, passport, or other valid photo ID.

Though it varies by market and location, many dispensaries only accept cash, including here at KushKlub. Therefore, it is important to come prepared. However, many dispensaries, including us, have ATMs. Just keep in mind that ATMs will take a small fee when you withdraw. Additionally, you may find dispensaries with card readers, though this is likely a version of an ATM that will also oftentimes take a fee.

Where to Find Recreational Dispensaries

The states that you’ll find recreational dispensaries in include, Washington State, Oregon, California, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, Montana, Alaska, Illinois, Michigan, Massachusetts, and Maine. Moreover, there are states that have legalized recreational marijuana but have not yet allowed the sale of cannabis. These states include Vermont, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, and New Mexico, in addition to Guam.

Additionally, Washington D.C. has legalized cannabis as well, but not the sale of it. However, there are gifting services that get around this in a legal, but gray-area way.
