Cannabis Store vs Weed Dispensary vs Pot Shop

Thanks to the legalization of weed in Washington and other states, many cannabis lovers no longer have to hit up their local dealer to cop. Now, consumers can visit a weed store nearby to pick up legal cannabis products. However, with legalization comes new terms that may be confusing to some. Just like how marijuana is called dozens of different names, weed stores are also referred to in different ways.

Cannabis Store vs Weed Dispensary vs Pot Shop

The most common and technical name for a weed store is a dispensary. You may see or hear it called a weed dispensary, cannabis dispensary, marijuana dispensary, or just a dispensary. Further, stores that only offer medical cannabis are often referred to as medical marijuana dispensaries or just medical dispensaries. Conversely, less formal but still accurate terms include cannabis store, weed store, pot shop, and weed shop. You may even hear a weed store called a “dispo,” which is short for dispensary.

All of these terms mean the same thing. Depending on what dispensary you go to, you may see their shop referred to as any of the above. It is most common and standard to see them labeled as a cannabis dispensary. Although, you’ll find many that use pot shop or weed store.

What is a Weed Dispensary?

A weed dispensary, such as KushKlub, is a regulated store where adults can buy legal cannabis products. There are three different types of dispensaries: recreational (also referred to as adult-use), medical, and stores that are both. Local regulations will determine what type you’ll find near you.

How to Purchase Weed at a Pot Shop

To purchase cannabis products at adult-use dispensaries, you must be 21 years or older. You do not need a special marijuana card like you would for medical dispensaries. However, you do need to show proof of age via a driver’s license, passport, or other valid photo ID. Commonly, medical dispensaries allow those 18 and older to purchase cannabis products with a medical license (determined by local regulations).

Though it varies by market and location, many dispensaries only accept cash, including here at KushKlub. Therefore, it is important to come prepared. However, many dispensaries, including us, have ATMs. Just keep in mind that ATMs will take a small fee when you withdraw. Additionally, you may find dispensaries with card readers, though this is likely a version of an ATM that will also oftentimes take a fee.

Where to Find Cannabis Stores Near Me

The states that you’ll find recreational dispensaries in include, Washington State, Oregon, California, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, Montana, Alaska, Illinois, Michigan, Massachusetts, and Maine. Moreover, there are states that have legalized recreational marijuana but have not yet allowed the sale of cannabis. These states include Vermont, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, and New Mexico, in addition to Guam.

Additionally, Washington D.C. has legalized cannabis as well, but not the sale of it. However, there are gifting services that get around this in a legal, but gray-area way.

If you’re looking for medical dispensaries, you will have luck in Florida, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Utah, Delaware, Hawaii, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, Ohio, Rhode Island, and West Virginia.
